Veterinary Opportunities for Students
Compassion • Respect • Professionalism • Teamwork
Our clinics run multiple student intake periods per year, with limited placement positions available. These positions are available through until the completion of the placement component of the course but must be completed within 12 months of commencement.
Companion Animal Student Placements
Participants in the Externship Program are part of a well-designed training program, and will experience the typical caseload of a large regional companion animal practice.
As a large regional practice, we see a diverse range of interesting and exciting cases, and we only refer if we absolutely have to. For this reason, participants in the BVP/EVH Externship Program will receive exposure and opportunities not seen in many metropolitan clinics.
BVP / EVH’s Externship Program is participatory in nature and not merely a “shadowing” experience. The student vet will be encouraged to actively take part in hospital rounds and case discussions. We encourage sharing of thoughts and questions about cases and appreciate the fresh perspective that you will bring.
Because our clinic rarely refers and the caseload is diverse, we feel that the most value will be gained by externs in our practice from week five onwards, when there is the capability for a more hands-on experience.
Our goal is to equip externs with the tools they need to learn and grow!
Equine Student Placements
Participants in the Externship Program are part of a well-designed training program and will experience the typical caseload of one of the largest and most experienced equine hospitals in the Southern Hemisphere.
We are renowned for our expertise in equine surgery and advanced diagnostic imaging and offer both primary and referral consultations, as well as a full range of racetrack and on-farm services.
Our fully equipped hospital and our team of highly-experienced specialist surgeons, veterinarians, nursing, and stable staff ensure that your equine rotation will be a fulfilling learning experience.
The nature of the externship enables students to integrate with our team and gain in-depth experience in both hospital-based and ambulatory equine veterinary work. We encourage sharing of thoughts and questions about cases and appreciate the fresh perspective that you will bring.
We operate as a surgical referral facility for Melbourne and a wide area of Western Victoria, so depending on caseload, there will be the opportunity to closely observe both standing routine procedures and those under GA, and possibly major emergency surgery. Our goal is to expose externs to practical techniques and provide them with the opportunity to experience equine veterinary care.
Interested students should email [email protected] with a resume and cover letter outlining your preferred placement dates, and a member of our team will be in touch.
